How do you explain a blocker in French?
Say what you finished, explain what prevents the next task, ask a specific colleague for help, and state your next action. Start with: « J’ai terminé… Je ne peux pas… Pourrais-tu… ? Dès que…, je… »
French at Work, episode 1. For B1–B2 learners updating French-speaking teammates: practise a stand-up and follow-up chat, then write four sentences about your work. This structure is a language exercise, not a required meeting format.
A stand-up with a concrete blocker
This original teaching dialogue uses fictional colleagues. Léa finished a login form but cannot test it. Malik can help investigate.
- Malik: « Où en es-tu sur le formulaire de connexion ? »
Where are you with the login form? - Léa: « J’ai terminé le formulaire, mais je ne peux pas encore le tester. »
I’ve finished the form, but I can’t test it yet. - Malik: « Qu’est-ce qui te bloque ? »
What’s blocking you? - Léa: « Mon compte n’a pas accès à l’environnement de test. Pourrais-tu vérifier mes droits d’accès après la réunion ? »
My account doesn’t have access to the test environment. Could you check my access permissions after the meeting? - Malik: « Oui, envoie-moi le message d’erreur dans le chat. »
Yes, send me the error message in the chat. - Léa: « D’accord. Dès que j’aurai accès à l’environnement, je lancerai les tests. »
OK. As soon as I have access to the environment, I’ll run the tests.
Later, in their team chat:
- Léa: « Voici le message : “Accès refusé”. Pour l’instant, je prépare les données de test. »
Here’s the message: “Access denied.” For now, I’m preparing the test data. - Malik: « Merci, je vérifie les droits de ton compte et je te tiens au courant. »
Thanks, I’ll check your account permissions and keep you updated.
Léa separates completed work from unfinished testing, asks for specific help, and avoids promising a repair time.
These colleagues use tu. Follow your team’s established usage; with someone you address as vous, change Pourrais-tu vérifier… ? to Pourriez-vous vérifier… ?
Eight phrases you can adapt
These phrases fit a collegial professional exchange. Replace the task or obstacle while keeping the pattern.
- J’ai terminé le formulaire. — “I’ve finished the form.” Use J’ai terminé + noun: la documentation, les tests. Only name completed work.
- Je travaille sur la connexion. — “I’m working on login.” Use Je travaille sur + noun: le formulaire, la correction. This is ongoing work.
- Je ne peux pas encore le tester. — “I can’t test it yet.” Use Je ne peux pas encore + infinitive: lancer les tests. Pas encore means “not yet.”
- Je suis bloquée par un problème d’accès. — “I’m blocked by an access problem.” Use Je suis bloqué/bloquée par + cause: une erreur. Match bloqué/bloquée to the speaker.
- J’ai besoin d’un compte de test pour continuer. — “I need a test account to continue.” Use J’ai besoin de + noun + pour + infinitive. Replace un compte de test with la réponse de l’API.
- Pourrais-tu vérifier mes droits d’accès ? — “Could you check my access permissions?” Use Pourrais-tu + infinitive: regarder cette erreur avec moi. This softens the request; use Pourriez-vous with vous.
- Dès que j’aurai accès, je lancerai les tests. — “As soon as I have access, I’ll run the tests.” Use Dès que + future, future: Dès que l’API répondra, je relancerai les tests.
- En attendant, je prépare les données. — “In the meantime, I’m preparing the data.” Use En attendant, je + present: mets à jour la documentation. Name useful work while waiting.

Three misunderstandings to avoid
Say exactly what is finished. On its own, J’ai fini (“I’ve finished”) can leave colleagues guessing what is complete. J’ai terminé le formulaire, mais il reste à le tester means “I’ve finished the form, but it still needs testing.”
Name the obstacle, not a person to blame. Malik me bloque sounds as though Malik himself is obstructing you. Describe the dependency instead: Je n’ai pas encore accès à l’environnement de test — “I don’t have access to the test environment yet.” Then ask who can help.
A request is different from an instruction. Vérifie mes droits is the imperative “Check my permissions.” It can work in an established working relationship, but Pourrais-tu vérifier mes droits ? explicitly asks for help. Giving a reason makes the request easier to act on.

Build your four-sentence update
Both versions communicate finished work, the blocker, a named helper, and the next action.
Supported version: B1 practice
J’ai terminé le formulaire de connexion. Je ne peux pas le tester parce que mon compte n’a pas accès à l’environnement de test. Malik, est-ce que tu peux vérifier mes droits après la réunion ? Ensuite, si j’ai accès à l’environnement, je lancerai les tests.
Notice si j’ai, with the present tense after si: “if I have access.” The result uses the future, je lancerai.
More nuanced version: B2 practice
Le formulaire de connexion est terminé, mais les tests restent à faire. Pour l’instant, mon compte n’a pas accès à l’environnement de test. Malik, pourrais-tu vérifier mes droits après la réunion pour que je puisse avancer ? Dès que j’aurai accès à l’environnement, je lancerai les tests.
Pour que je puisse avancer means “so that I can move forward.” Pour que introduces the purpose and takes the subjunctive, here puisse. Compare that with the future j’aurai after dès que.
Your turn: the API is not responding
You finished the login form and have access to the test environment. However, the API is not responding, preventing testing. Ask Camille to check the API after the meeting. You will run the tests once it responds.
Write four French sentences before reading the answer. Check that you have:
- Named the completed work.
- Explained the obstacle and what it prevents.
- Asked Camille for a specific action.
- Made the next action depend on the API responding.
One possible answer
J’ai terminé le formulaire de connexion. Je ne peux pas le tester parce que l’API ne répond pas. Camille, pourrais-tu vérifier l’API après la réunion ? Dès qu’elle répondra, je lancerai les tests.
Elle refers to l’API: French interface is feminine. Different wording is fine if it conveys all four points.
Tomorrow’s recall: hide the examples. Write the update again, but this time the API works and you are missing a test account. Change the obstacle, the help request, and the condition for starting the tests.

Copy this fictional example:
Je ne peux pas tester le formulaire parce que l’API ne répond pas.
