Short answer
As of 29 October 2026, Quick CRS lists the latest French-language proficiency Express Entry round as number 452, on 27 October 2026, with a CRS cut-off of 407 and 5,000 invitations. The same table lists the previous French-language round, number 450 on 16 October 2026, at a cut-off of 435, also with 5,000 invitations. IRCC’s rounds of invitations is the official record. Check it before you treat either cut-off as current.
NCLC 7 reading means you can follow the main point of an everyday or workplace French text and the detail that limits it. A CRS cut-off is not that level, and it is not a promise about the next round.
Best next step: read the short original passage below, answer the two questions, then do another one on the TEF and TCF reading practice page.
This is not immigration advice. Apprendr is not affiliated with IRCC, TEF, or TCF, and it does not score those tests.
What this round does not tell you
IRCC’s French-language proficiency category requires French test results of at least NCLC 7 in all four abilities, including reading. The 407 figure above is the lowest Comprehensive Ranking System score invited in the round Quick CRS lists. It is not a reading score, and a stronger speaking result does not replace reading.
IRCC’s language-test page is where the TEF Canada and TCF Canada grids live. There is more than one published TEF reading column, so this article does not collapse NCLC 7 to a single number. The reading practice page quotes those grids next to the passages and says which program each column belongs to.
For a four-skill study loop rather than this round’s cut-off, use the July 2026 French-draw note. For how the tests are structured, use the TEF Canada and TCF Canada study guide.
What NCLC 7 reading looks like
At this level the useful question is not “did I recognize the topic?” It is “which sentence changes what I am allowed to do?”
A notice can open with good news and take it back in the next line:
| What you notice | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The first sentence states the new service. | That is the main point. |
| mais, seulement, ne… pas, or même si follows. | That is the limit. |
| A number (a date, a fee, a duration) sits inside the limit. | The question often turns on that number, not the topic. |
Official TEF Canada and TCF Canada reading sections are timed multiple-choice exams. The passage below is original, much shorter than a real section, and written in that style: one document, one correct reading, and a detail that contradicts the easy answer. It is practice, not a scored sample.
Practice passage
A library notice
Depuis lundi, la bibliothèque municipale prête des liseuses pour quatorze jours. Ce prêt ne peut pas être renouvelé en ligne. En cas de retard, l’usager paie deux dollars par jour. Si un autre lecteur a réservé un titre, ce titre n’apparaît pas sur l’appareil, même lorsque la liseuse a déjà été empruntée.
Natural reading: since Monday, the municipal library lends e-readers for fourteen days. That loan cannot be renewed online. A late return costs the user two dollars a day. If another reader has reserved a title, that title does not appear on the device, even when the e-reader has already been borrowed.
Question 1
Can this e-reader loan be renewed online?
- A. Yes, for fourteen more days
- B. Yes, unless the device is already late
- C. No. The loan lasts fourteen days and cannot be renewed online
- D. No, because e-readers are no longer lent
Answer: C. Pour quatorze jours is the length. Ne peut pas être renouvelé en ligne is the limit. The late fee is a different rule. Nothing in the notice says the library stopped lending e-readers.
Question 2
You already borrowed the e-reader. A title someone else reserved will…
- A. Appear on the device because the loan already started
- B. Not appear on the device
- C. Replace the fourteen-day loan with a shorter one
- D. Cost two dollars a day while you wait
Answer: B. Même lorsque la liseuse a déjà été empruntée is the trap. Having the device does not include a title reserved by someone else. The two-dollar fee is only for a late return.
The sentence worth a second look is Ce prêt ne peut pas être renouvelé en ligne. Paste it into Apprendr and read the grammar at your level.

Common questions
What was the latest French-language Express Entry draw?
As of 29 October 2026, Quick CRS lists round 452 on 27 October 2026 as a French-language proficiency round, with a CRS cut-off of 407 and 5,000 invitations. IRCC’s rounds-of-invitations page is the official list. Use that page if a tracker and the official list disagree.
Does a cut-off of 407 mean my reading is NCLC 7?
No. 407 is a CRS cut-off for the round described above. NCLC 7 is a French-test level. The category asks for NCLC 7 in each of the four abilities. This article cannot say whether you qualify.
What does NCLC 7 in reading actually look like?
You can get the main point and the detail that changes it. In the library notice, the new loan is the main point, and “not renewable online” plus “reserved titles do not appear” are the details that change what you can do. That is the skill. It is not a score.
Will Apprendr give me a TEF or TCF score?
No. Apprendr explains French you choose, at the CEFR level you set. It is not an official test and it does not promise a result on TEF Canada, TCF Canada, or an immigration application.
Where should I practise after this passage?
Use the NCLC 7 reading practice page for more documents in the same style, or the Chrome extension on French you are already reading.
