NCLC 7 reading

TEF and TCF reading practice for NCLC 7

NCLC 7 reading means you can follow the point, and the detail that changes it, in everyday and workplace French. TEF Canada and TCF Canada both test that with multiple-choice questions. The score band depends on the test and on which published grid your program uses.

What NCLC 7 reading means

NCLC is the French scale. CLB is the English scale. IRCC treats the same number as the same level, so NCLC 7 is the French counterpart of CLB 7. Programs that ask for it, including Federal Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience Class jobs in TEER 0 or 1, score each ability on its own. A strong speaking result does not cover a weak reading result.

TEF Canada reading

On the Express Entry language-test page, IRCC says to enter the “Équivalence ancien score” column, not the score out of 699. On that grid, NCLC 7 for compréhension de l’écrit is listed as 207–232. Some other IRCC pages publish a different grid for tests taken after 10 December 2023, where NCLC 7 reading is 434–461 on the scale out of 699. Your results sheet can show both. Enter the column your program asks for.

TCF Canada reading

IRCC’s Express Entry table lists NCLC 7 reading as 453–498. The France Éducation international candidate handbook places that same band next to CEFR B2. Treat B2 as a neighbour, not a promise that a B2 course equals NCLC 7 on test day. Listening, writing, and speaking use other numbers.

These bands are the ones IRCC publishes for Express Entry. They can change, and Quebec uses a different scale. Confirm the current table on Canada.ca before you enter a score. Apprendr is not a test centre and does not calculate an NCLC.

The kinds of texts on the exam

TEF Canada reading is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, on documents from everyday life, with one correct answer out of four. TCF Canada reading is 39 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, and the questions get harder as you go. You do not need a literature essay to reach NCLC 7. You do need to be accurate on ordinary French that is a little indirect.

Short practical documents

Notices, ads, schedules, menus, and forms. The question is usually a fact: who, when, what is still possible, what changed.

Messages and letters

An email or a letter that asks for something, refuses something, or does both. The last sentence often corrects the idea you formed in the first one.

Articles with a position

A short report where someone welcomes a change and still objects to part of it. Connectors such as mais, tout en, and plutôt carry the answer.

A practical way to study

Use official sample tasks for the clock and the answer sheet. Use the rest of the week on French you would actually read: a city notice, a workplace email, a short article. The exam is full of those documents. Memorizing one practice booklet does not build the same skill.

  1. Read once for the question

Read the question, then the passage. Answer from the text before you translate it. NCLC 7 reading is about the point and the detail that changes it, not every word.

  2. Mark the deciding sentence

Find the one sentence that makes the other choices wrong. If a negation, a tense, or a connector is what you hesitated on, that sentence is the one to study.

  3. Explain it, then meet it again

Open that sentence in Apprendr. Read the grammar at your level, listen once, and save the phrase that blocked you. Come back when the review queue brings it up.

How Apprendr helps

Apprendr is a French learning app, not an immigration adviser and not a TEF or TCF scorer. It is useful on the sentence that made you miss the question.

Explain a sentence

Select French in the Chrome extension, or paste it into the web app. You get the meaning in the context of that sentence, not a word list.

Grammar at your level

The same sentence is explained for the CEFR level you set, from A1 to C2. A B1 note stays on the structure you need. A B2 note can show why the tenses do not match.

Hear the sentence

Play the French after it makes sense, so the reading and the sound stay attached to the same line.

Save it for review

Signed in, the words and sentences you study are saved. They return in a review queue, and the gap before the next review grows when you remember them.

Three short passages

These texts are original. They are shorter than a real section, and they are not scored. Choose an answer, then open the key. When a sentence decided it, explain that sentence in the web app.

Passage 1: A short public notice

La bibliothèque du quartier ferme exceptionnellement le jeudi 12 mars pour un inventaire. Les retours de documents restent possibles toute la journée grâce à la boîte située à l'entrée. Les prêts en cours sont prolongés automatiquement jusqu'au lundi suivant. Les activités pour enfants prévues jeudi sont reportées au samedi 14 mars, à la même heure.

  1. 1. What can you still do on Thursday 12 March?

    Show answer

    B. Return documents in the box by the entrance

The library is closed for an inventory, but returns stay possible all day through the box at the entrance. The other options are not offered in the notice.

  2. 2. What happens to the Thursday children’s activities?

    Show answer

    C. They move to Saturday 14 March at the same time

Reportées means postponed, not cancelled. The new slot is Saturday 14 March, at the same time. Monday is only the new due date for books already on loan.

Explain the key sentence

Passage 2: An administrative email

Nous avons bien reçu votre demande de rendez-vous pour le renouvellement de votre carte d'assurance maladie. Comme il manque encore plusieurs pièces à votre dossier, nous ne pouvons pas confirmer la date du 4 avril. Veuillez nous envoyer une preuve d'adresse récente avant mercredi. Sans ce document, votre demande sera mise en attente, mais elle ne sera pas refusée.

  1. 1. Why is the 4 April appointment not confirmed?

    Show answer

    B. Some documents are still missing from the file

The email says several documents are still missing, so the date cannot be confirmed. It asks for a recent proof of address; it does not say that a recent proof is a problem.

  2. 2. If the proof of address does not arrive, the request will be…

    Show answer

    C. Put on hold, and not refused

The last sentence is the trap. Mise en attente means put on hold. Mais elle ne sera pas refusée cancels the idea that a missing document equals a refusal.

Passage 3: A short civic article

Depuis janvier, la ville a ajouté deux lignes de bus le soir, mais le dernier départ reste fixé à 22 h 15. Les associations de quartier saluent les nouveaux horaires, tout en rappelant que les travailleurs qui finissent après 23 h n'en profitent pas. La mairie affirme que prolonger le service coûterait trop cher cette année. Elle propose plutôt d'étudier une navette les vendredis et samedis, sans s'engager sur une date.

  1. 1. What do the neighbourhood associations say?

    Show answer

    B. They welcome the new hours and note that shifts ending after 23:00 still miss the bus

Saluent means they welcome the new hours. Tout en rappelant adds a limit: people who finish after 23:00 do not benefit, because the last bus is still 22:15.

  2. 2. What has the city actually committed to?

    Show answer

    C. Studying a Friday and Saturday shuttle, with no date promised

Prolonger le service is what the city says it will not pay for this year. Étudier une navette is only a study. Sans s’engager sur une date means no start date was promised.

Explain the key sentence

Quebec applicants should also read the note on Quebec’s own French scale. That scale is not the NCLC table above.

Questions

What TEF Canada or TCF Canada reading score is NCLC 7?

IRCC publishes the grids, and they are not one number for every form. On the Express Entry language-test page, TEF Canada asks you to enter the “Équivalence ancien score” column, where NCLC 7 reading is listed as 207–232, not the score out of 699. Some other IRCC program pages list NCLC 7 reading as 434–461 for TEF tests taken after 10 December 2023, on the scale out of 699. For TCF Canada, the Express Entry table lists NCLC 7 reading as 453–498. Use the table for your program, and use the NCLC printed on your results when the columns disagree.

Is NCLC 7 the same as CLB 7?

NCLC is the French benchmark and CLB is the English one. IRCC treats a given number as the same level on the two scales, so NCLC 7 is the French counterpart of CLB 7. It is not a higher or lower bar. Each ability is scored on its own, so a stronger speaking result does not replace reading.

Does Quebec use this NCLC reading table?

No. Quebec scores French on the Échelle québécoise des niveaux de compétence en français, and it accepts a wider list of tests, including TEF Canada, TCF Canada, TEFAQ, and TCF Québec. A result that maps to NCLC 7 on an IRCC table is not automatically the same level in Quebec. Check the current correspondence table for your Quebec program before you treat a practice result as a passing score.

What kinds of texts are on the reading section?

TEF Canada reading is a 60-minute multiple-choice section of 40 questions on documents from everyday situations, with one correct answer out of four. TCF Canada reading is a 60-minute multiple-choice section of 39 questions, and the questions get harder as you go. Across that range you meet short messages, ads, schedules, letters, workplace texts, and articles where the writer takes a position. The passages on this page are original and much shorter than a full section.

Will Apprendr give me an official TEF or TCF score?

No. Apprendr explains French you read, at the CEFR level you set, and can save words for later review. It does not score TEF Canada, TCF Canada, or an immigration application. Use the test provider’s sample tasks for the real timing and format, and IRCC or Quebec.ca for the score you need.

How should I use Apprendr while I prepare?

Read a real French text once and answer from the passage. Then select the sentence that decided the answer, in the free Chrome extension or by pasting it into the web app. Read the grammar note at your level, play the audio, and save the word or phrase that blocked you. Signed-in saves return in a review queue, and the gap before the next review grows when you remember the item.
